“Well, greetings to all our friends and relatives down in Memphis this evening. Friends, we’re over at Evalina’s I am tonight. Of course Miss Sikes is here and the babies are asleep; little Danny and Joyce both are asleep. Bucky’s gone downtown to see about a music job for this week; he and that fine musician that plays with him, Mr Kibbler. Oh he’s a fiddle player from way back. And we’re just kind of taking it easy sitting here. Miss Sikes, she’s very comfortable, and her mouth is fixed just like it usually is [laughter] and I’m just waiting to get into the same thing. So, Evalina how bout you sayin something now to the folks?”
Long: “That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine”.

What can I say about the audio with which I start this work, it is impressive, it paralysed my whole body, I cried when I found it, it was a shiver. Still every time I listen to it something happens in my body that I can't explain. For me, it is one of the most beautiful audios I have ever heard in my life.
For a moment I think that these women no longer exist, only their voices remain. But these voices are more of a presence to me than if I had seen a photograph of their bodies, suddenly appearing to me on that hot night, with the children just asleep, speaking through an old charcoal microphone next to a small open reel recorder. They come to me in their simple dresses with tiny flowers, their black, shiny faces and their white smiles with their wrinkles, they manifest themselves singing, laughing, crying; they emerge and I am there watching them as if enraptured, I am there,
Am I there or are all those voices now with me?
They are old voices without bodies, from another world without time, space or language.
The first audio appears on a ten-inch aluminium acetate disc labelled "Wilcox-Gay Recordio Disc", the title on side A is "Greetings by Reg, Eva, Mrs. Sikes. (Greetings to Reg from Eva Sikes) the other side of the disc is scratched and unplayable, it is titled "Jokes, 12/6/49" (Jokes 12-6-1949).
It was probably a recording, a sort of greeting from some Memphis women to their husbands who were away at war in Germany. The track begins by saying:
"Well, greetings to all our friends and relatives down in Memphis this evening. Friends, we're over at Evalina's I am tonight. Of course Miss Sikes is here and the babies are asleep; little Danny and Joyce both are asleep. Bucky's gone downtown to see about a music job for this week; he and that fine musician that plays with him, Mr Kibbler. Oh he's a fiddle player from way back. And we're just kind of taking it easy sitting here. Miss Sikes, she's very comfortable, and her mouth is fixed just like it usually is [laughter] and I'm just waiting to get into the same thing. So, Evalina how bout you sayin something now to the folks?"
The track ends with the three women singing a capella to a song by Gene Autry 1932 and Jimmy Long: "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine".
